My ribs knocked the away from the post making it visible after falling.
I landed right next to it. Just a couple of inches and the post would have gonethrough my back and out my belly. The force from falling off the ladder would have driven the post clean through me without a doubt. I would have been skewered. I can’t get it out of my mind.
I had trouble getting up in the soft snow as it was. If that fence post was sticking through me I would have laid there and bled to death. I would have been like a turtle on its back unable to get up. It would have been impossible for me to pull myself up with the post sticking through me. The elderly lady could not have lifted me up. And 20 miles from the nearest paramedic on back roads having to give directions on how to get there while it was still snowing would have taken too long.
I would have bled to death or choked to death on my own blood as the post would have gone through one lung as it passed through me.
When I got home and went to bed I couldn’t sleep because I kept thinking of how close I came to dying.I finally went to sleep and woke up in the middle of the night thinking about it again and couldn’t go back to sleep. I tossed and turned trying to think of something else so I could get some sleep but, I couldn’t so I finally just got up.
So I decided to write about it. I still see that narrow fence post sticking up which almost had my name on it. Bill Benson was almost a thing of the past.
It’s amazing how life can change so quickly. I was thinking, yesterday could have been my last picture I posted on Boomers. Almost was.
